Job Overview
Technical Consultants assume responsibility for architecture oversight and technical leadership during the course of systems development projects. The Technical Consultant would be responsible to conduct technical feasibility of new projects, recommending technical solutions in alignment to FIL Technology roadmap, developing technical approach and high level estimates as part of project proposal. Along with, this position would be responsible for definition and maintenance of the FIL technical delivery method, comprising all aspects of project delivery from code standards and review process to unit test coverage and metrics reporting. It may undertake the solution architect role for assigned projects and collaborate with systems development teams to ensure the technical delivery is fully adopted in these organisations.
Responsibilities
This role is for a Technical Consultant who can understand complex technical and architectural issues and has the ability to understand the implications associated with the chosen technical strategy. The successful candidate will be expected to interact with all levels of the technical and business community, seeking approval from all stakeholders of the projects.
Responsibilities include:
* Work with the business analysts and product architects to devise and propose the system solution to business problems or new opportunities, help prepare the proposals with the ball park estimates and high level
risks identified to help business on ordering new projects.
* Perform project technical feasibility study and conduct technical solution workshops during the initial analysis phase
* Define, document and maintain the technical delivery method ensuring standardisation of all activities involved in the delivery of IT projects.
* For assigned projects, ensure all application construction or modification work associated with an assigned project is undertaken in compliance with environmental specifications provided by FIL Systems environment management personnel.
* For assigned projects, oversee construction of all functional project artefacts in accordance with FIL Systems development methodology, technical delivery method and quality gates.
* For assigned projects, ensure all project artefacts are constructed, compiled, packaged and documented in accordance with FIL Systems policies
* Maintain knowledge of all FIL Systems enterprise architecture developments and governance activities that impact technical delivery practices.
* Support and mentor delivery engineers who are interested in advancing to a solution architect role
* Undertake training and certification activities to maintain and document skills and safeguard ability to contribute to FIL Systems objectives.
* Build trusted relationships with business partners and proactively seek feedback on systems processes and personal performance
* Provide recommendations and help direct reports with talent management: objective setting, career development, job rotations, fair and timely appraisals, pipeline management, training, international opportunities, and identification of high potentials, under-performers.
Job Requirements
Necessary Skills are:
* 10+ years overall experience of 'hands on' system software analysis, development, testing and maintenance
* Practical experience of eBusiness, eCommerce & Internet technologies, best practices & industry standards
* Project development and delivery experience of multiple good size projects
* 7+ years building OO systems with Java with real in depth knowledge of both areas
* Experience in using a test driven development approach using JMock and JUnit or other similar libraries
* 7+ years web development experience including skills from HTML, JSP, Servlet, JavaScript, J2EE and Java programming languages
* Hands-on experience in J2EE and Java programming language
* Good knowledge of prevalent web frameworks like Struts and Spring
* Good knowledge of integration of web applications with legacy backend systems using SOA based architecture
* Good knowledge of web and application servers, preferably IBM IHS & WAS
* Good knowledge of RIA implementation patterns and JavaScript frameworks like Backbone, Marionette etc.
* Hands-on experience in one of the required development environments and tools (Eclipse, IDE, RAD, WSAD, RSA)
* Hands on experience of RDBMS and SQL, preferably Oracle
* Experience of best practices development methodologies, including Agile/DSDM/XP
* A good working understanding of UML
* Performance Tuning of Applications
Preferable Skills are:
* Web, caching and scheduling frameworks like - Spring MVC, EHCache and Quartz
* Content Management Systems especially TeamSite / Livesite
* Knowledge of UNIX, Ant, TeamCity and experience of continuous integration
* Some knowledge of Web Analytics and related tools like GSA or Tealeaf or Webtrends
* Spring / other IOC containers
* Understanding of SOA with implementation experience
* Application Integration experience with In Memory Data Grid (IMDG) products like GemFire
* Some knowledge of implementing and integrating using Web Services ((SOAP, REST, WS-*) - RAD, WSAD
* Some knowledge of Web Services standards including WS-I Compliance, WSDL, JAX-RPC, JAX-WS
* Knowledge of Identity Management Solutions, CA Siteminder
* Configuration Management tools, Rational Clearcase, SVN, PVCS would be an advantage.
* Some knowledge of SCA (Service Component Architecture)
* Knowledge of WAS administration
* Knowledge of Sybase
